Padavettu Review: A powerful tale of resistance

Nivin Pauly’s long-delayed film ‘Padavettu’ is a socio-political drama set in a village named Maloor in North Kerala. Nivin plays Ravi, a traumatised man who is stuck in life after a bike accident. Once a champion athlete, Ravi now leads a lazy life living with his aunt, a hard-working woman. Their house is in a bad condition, but their request for help from the Panchayat isn’t heard.

The opposition party takes up their case and renovates their house. Kuyyali, the party’s leader, though has evil intentions. They are tricked by the party, who publicise the house as their gift. Ravi is subject to frequent mockery from the villagers who call him ‘vaka Ravi’. This enrages him after a point and he begins to react. He spoils Kuyyali’s plans to cheat the farmers in the village and encroach their lands. Ravi turns into a messiah of sorts for the village as he leads a resistance movement against Kuyyali and his party.

Nivin Pauly’s performance is one of the film’s biggest strengths. With his measured act, he makes sure the character Ravi, a complex one, is safe in his hands. Shammy Thilakan is equally good as the story’s villain, Kuyyali. There are certain points where we see flashes of his father, the legendary Thilakan. Shine Tom Chacko, Indrans, Aditi Balan, Sudheesh, Vijayaraghavan also play their parts well. Sunny Wayne, one of the producers of the film, also makes a noteworthy cameo appearance.

‘Padavettu’, in a nutshell, is a relevant story of revolution that’s told engagingly.

The sets of Mammootty’s new film ‘Kaathal’ had a distinguished guest when Suriya visited the location. Suriya’s wife actor Jyotika is making her comeback after a decade by playing the female lead in it. Mammootty shared photos taken with Suriya and Jyotika in social media and wrote,

‘Kaathal’, directed by Jeo Baby, has Mammootty playing a politican named Mathew Devassy. Debutants Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria have scripted the film. The makers are yet to reveal any details regarding its plot or genre. Lalu Alex, Muthumani, Chinnu Chandni, Sudhi Kozhikode, Anagha Akku, and Adarsh Sukumaran are also part of the supporting cast.

Produced by Mammootty’s own banner Mammootty Kampany, ‘Kaathal’ has cinematographer Salu K Thomas, editor Francies Louis and music director Mathews Pulickal in the technical team.

Bermuda confirmed to hit screens this Friday

We had earlier reported about Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt starring in ‘Bermuda’, directed by TK Rajeev Kumar. The film, which has seen multiple delays in release, is now confirmed to hit screens on November 11. It will clash with Vineeth Sreenivasan’s ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’ and Arjun Ashokan’s ‘Thattassery Koottam’ at the box office this week.

‘Bermuda’ promises to be quirky fun entertainer. Scripted by Krishnadas Panki, the film has Shane Nigam essaying a character named Indugopan, who is a bank employee. The plot kicks off when he approaches Vinay Forrt’s cop character sub-Inspector Joshua with a complaint.

Saiju Kurup, ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ fame Gowri Nandha, Sudheer Karamana, Harish Kanaran, Dinesh Panicker and Niranjana Anoop will be seen in supporting roles. Earlier the makers had released song sung by Mohanlal. Titled ‘Chodhyachinnam Pole’, the song is composed by Ramesh Narayan and written by Vinayak Sasikumar. It is one of very few instances where Mohanlal has sung a song for a film which he is not a part of.

Karthi’s new film Japan launched

After the back-to-back success of ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’ and ‘Sardar’, Karthi is next set to team up with director Raju Murugan for a new film titled ‘Japan’. The project backed by Dream Warrior Pictures got launched last day with a customary pooja ceremony.

‘Japan’ stars Anu Emmanuel as the female lead. This is her first outing with Karthi. Director Vijay Milton and Telugu actor Sunil will also essaying prominent roles in the film. It has music scored by GV Prakash, cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by Philomin Raj and action choreography by Anbariv. More details regarding the project are awaited.

Karthi has the sequels to ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ and ‘Sardar’. While shoot for ‘PS 2’ has already been wrapped up, it is not yet known when ‘Sardar 2’ will begin. The first part, directed by PS Mithran, had Karthi in a dual role as a spy father and a cop son. Despite facing off with Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Prince’ at the box office, ‘Sardar’ managed to emerged the winner and successfully crossed the Rs 100 crore mark.

Dileep confirms joining hands with Tinu Pappachan

For a while now, there have been speculations about Dileep joining hands with director Tinu Pappachan. The actor confirmed it a recent press meet of his upcoming production ‘Thattassery Koottam’. He revealed that talks for the Tinu project are underway and added that he will soon announce it officially.

Tinu Pappachan, an associate of Lijo Jose Pellissery, is known for making raw action films like ‘Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil’ and ‘Ajagajantharam’. Expectations will be high when he teams up with Dileep as it has been a long time since the actor has done a full-fledged action role. Tinu is currently working on ‘Chaaver’, which stars Kunchacko Boban, Antony Varghese and Arjun Ashokan. The director had also announced a film with Jayasurya earlier.

Meanwhile, Dileep is shooting for ‘Bandra’ directed by Arun Gopy. Meanwhile, ‘Voice Of Sathyanathan’ directed by Raffi is also gearing up for release. The long-standing superhero film ‘Parakkum Pappan’ is his other upcoming project.

Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Mukundan Unni Associates censored; All set for release

The Vineeth Sreenivasan starrer ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’ has been censored with a clean U certificate. With that, the film is now all set to hit screens this Friday (November 11). Along with releasing in a good number of screens in Kerala, the film will also have a simultaneous release outside the state.

‘Mukundan Unni Associates’ marks the directorial debut of editor Abhinav Sunder Nayak. He has also co-written the film along with Vimal Gopalakrishnan. It has Vineeth in the role of an advocate. From the trailer, it looks like a grey-shaded role. The film also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu, Arsha Chandhini, Baiju, Sudhi Koppa, Tanvi Ram, Manikandan Pattambi, Sudheesh, George Kora, Althaf Salim, Biju Sopanam, and Riya Saira among others.

It has ‘Hridayam’ cinematographer Viswajith Odukkathil cranking the camera. Music is by Sibi Mathew Alex. Director Abhinav is handling the edits along with Nidhin Raj Arol.

Suresh Gopi’s next JSK launched

Suresh Gopi’s new film JSK got launched with a formal pooja ceremony last day in Irinjalakuda. Debutant Pravin Narayanan is directing the film, which is said to be a legal drama. Suresh Gopi is reportedly playing an advocate’s role in the film, which also marks the acting debut of his younger son Madhav Suresh. Anupama Parameswaran is also essaying a prominent role in the film.

Announcing the project, Suresh Gopi wrote in his social media handle,

Anaswara Rajan to star in GV Prakash’s next

Malayalam actress Anaswara Rajan has been roped in for a major role in GV Prakash’s next film. This will be her second Tamil film after starring alongside Trisha in the yet-to-be-released ‘Raangi’. The upcoming film is directed by Udhay Mahesh, who is popular for his role as Chellam sir in ‘The Family Man’ series. Streaming platform Disney+Hotstar is foraying into film production with this film. They are backing it jointly with Kavithalayaa Productions.

Touted to be a feel-good family drama, the film has Devadarshini as GV Prakash’s sister. The story revolves around the bond GV’s character shares with his niece. The cast also includes Daniel Anne Pope, Subbu Panchu, Madhusudhan Rao and Namo Naryanan in pivotal roles.

Malayalam composer Hesham Abdul Wahab, best known for his sensational work in ‘Hridayam’, has been signed as the music director for this film. More details regarding the project are expected to be out soon.

Karthi’s Sardar hits 100 cr at the box office

Karthi’s Deepavali release ‘Sardar’ has successfully hit the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office. The film, which got released on October 21 and had a direct cash with Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Prince’, has emerged as the Deepavali winner.

Directed by PS Mithran, ‘Sardar’ is a spy-thriller dealing with a relevant social issue and geo politics. The film has the actor in a dual role as a cop and a legendary spy, who is famously called Sardar. Rajisha Vijayan and Raashi Khanna essay the female leads in the film. Bollywood actor Chunky Pandey will be seen as the antagonist in the film. Laila, Ilavarasu, Munishkanth and many others are part of the cast.

‘Sardar’ is produced by Lakshman Kumar under the banner of Prince Pictures. Right after the film was declared a hit, the makers arranged a success meet where they announced a second part. More details regarding the same are awaited.

Prithviraj and Mohanlal meet for Empuraan discussions; Shoot to begin soon

As we already know, the blockbuster Mohanlal starrer ‘Lucifer’ is getting a second part titled ‘Empuraan’. The project got announced right after the success of ‘Lucifer’ and ever since then, expectations have been on the rise. While it was slated to go on floors much earlier, the pandemic spoilt their plans. The makers are now all set to begin production.

Last day, Mohanlal, Prithviraj and Antony Perumbavoor met for the film’s discussions. Scriptwriter Murali Gopy also took to his social media handle to tease the fans.

On Monday, Prithviraj Sukumaran, the actor-turned-director shared a photo on Instagram hinting that the film’s work is in progress.

The photo featured a close up of Mohanlal’s eyes from ‘Lucifer’ and he captioned it as ‘Manifest mode.

‘Empuraan’ will have Mohanlal returning as Stephen Nedumbally aka Khureshi Ab’raam. Prithviraj will be reprising his role of Zayed Masood from the first part. Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier and Indrajith Sukumaran are expected to be part of this film as well, which has been planned on a much bigger scale.
