As Keerthy Suresh’s ‘Penguin’ is gearing up for a direct OTT release, the makers have shared the trailer online. As expected from the teaser and the posters, the trailer looks every bit thrilling and has shades of psycho killer films from the west. It looks like the story is about the search for a missing husband and a psycho killer on loose.

‘Penguin’ is written and directed by debutant Eshvar Karthic. The film has high expectations among cinephiles thanks to the intriguing promos and the involvement of Karthik Subbaraj. The ‘Petta’ director is producing this film under his banner of Stone Bench Films. It is also Keerthy Suresh’s first solo-lead film to be released after winning the National Award for Best Actress last year.

‘Penguin’ is the second Tamil mainstream film Jyothika’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ to get a direct OTT release. Amazon Prime has bagged the film’s streaming rights and it is slated for premiere on June 19. The film will be released simutlaneously in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages.

Dhanush starrer ‘Asuran’ is one of the most talked about Tamil films in recent times. The film directed by Vetrimaaran was a huge success both critically and commercially. It is already getting remade in Telugu as ‘Naarappa’ with Venkatesh playing the lead role. Talks are also on for the Kannada and Hindi remake rights.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that the film will be dubbed and released in Chinese language. Producer Kalaipuli S Thanu has confirmed this. He is hopeful about the film doing well in Chinese markets. The huge success of Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ of Irrfan Khan’s ‘Hindi Medium’ in China has opened the market for Indian films.

‘Asuran’ is the story of a lower caste family’s fight for survival. Director Vetrimaaran adapted the film from Poomani’s famous novel ‘Vekkai’. Dhanush’s stellar perfomance in the film was unanimously appreciated. It is also the star’s first film to enter the elite Rs 100 crore club.

Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has always been open about his love for South Indian actors and films. For instance, the title card of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, his most acclaimed film, had a mention about the Madurai triumvirate – Bala, Ameer and Sasikumar. Kashyap credited these directors for inspiring him to get back to his roots and tell stories of his homeland.

He has also spoken about his admiration for Thiagaraja Kumararaja, Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi, Selvaraghavan etc. In a recent interview, Kashyap revealed that Dhanush was his initial choice for the movie ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’. He added that even narrated the script to the star but it didn’t work out due to various reasons. The film was later made with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal playing the leads.

Kashyap also revealed that he had planned to do a film with Vijay Sethupathi but because of the delay, it couldn’t materialise. They later collaborated in the Tamil film ‘Imaikka Nodigal’. Vijay Sethupathi played an extended cameo role in it and Kashyap essayed a grey-shaded character.

Kaaval teaser to be released on Suresh Gopi’s birthday

The teaser of Suresh Gopi’s upcoming film ‘Kaaval’ will be released online on June 26, which happens to be the star’s birthday. The Nithin Renji Panciker directorial is a highly anticipated film as Suresh Gopi is making his comeback to genre after a long gap. Touted to be an action-packed family drama, the story set in the high ranges of Idukki and spans across different timelines.

‘Kaaval’ was on the verge of competition when lockdown was announced. The team has still got 10 more days of shoot left and it’s expected to be resumed once lockdown restrictions are over. Meanwhile, they have started the post-production activities. Dubbing works are already underway.

The film has Renji Panicker playing a crucial role along with Suresh Gopi. Both the actors will be appearing in two getups in the film – an older and younger look. Zaya David, Alencier Ley Lopez, IM Vijayan, Sujith Shankar, Kichu Tellus, Binu Pappu, Santhosh Keezhattoor, Muthumani and Pathamaraj Ratheesh are also part of the cast.

National award winner Nikhil S Praveen is the DOP and Ranjin Raj of ‘Joseph’ fame handles the music department. Joby George of Goodwill Entertainments is producing the film.

After going through a drastic physical transformation for ‘Aadujeevitham’, Prithviraj Sukumaran is currently in the process of getting back in shape. Soon after returning back from Jordan, he had started working out. Just a while back, he shared a new gym pic in which he looks perfect with ripped muscles. Since it will take some more time for the industry to resume functioning normally, the actor has time to concentrate on his physique and spend time with family.

On the work front, Prithviraj has several projects lined up. The action-epic ‘Kaaliyan’, ‘Kaduva’ with Shaji Kailas, ‘Ayalvaashi’ with Irshad Parari’, ‘Karachi 81’ with KS Bava and ‘Railway Guard’ with Deepu Karunamakaran are some of his already announced films. He was also supposed to start works on his ‘Empuraan’, the much awaited second part of ‘Lucifer’ next year.

We will have to wait and see how Prithviraj plans to adjust his schedules and complete these films.

After Ayushmann Khurrana – Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ and Vidya Balan’s ‘Shakuntala Devi’, another big mainstream Hindi film is getting a direct OTT release. Janhvi Kapoor starrer ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’ will premiere soon on Netflix. The makers have released a statement which reads,

Gunjan Saxena is a defining film based on a true story about a woman who showed unparalleled courage, and inspiration to many in the coming years. We are excited to partner with Netflix and share this fearless story about following your heart and your dreams with millions around the world.

The film directed by Sharan Sharma is the biopic of Gunjan Saxena, a flight lieutenant who was posted in Kargil during the 1999 war. She had heroically evacuated injured soldiers from the war field and air-dropping supplies flying through Kashmir. Gunjan was awarded the Shaurya Vir Award, for her outstanding show of courage in the Kargil war. She became the first woman to receive such an honour from the army.

Jhanvi is playing Gunjan Saxena’s role in the film. The cast also includes Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Vineet Kumar and Manav Vij. Karan Johar is producing the film under the banner of Dharma Productions.

Chiyaan 60 to be an action-packed gangster film!

After all the speculations, the official announcement regarding ‘Chiyaan 60’ has finally been made. Karthik Subbaraj will be directing the film that has the father-son duo of Vikram and Dhruv in the lead. Lalith Kumar of 7 Screen Studio is producing the film and Anirudh Ravichander will be composing the music.

From the announcement poster, in which we can see a gun being passed on from one person to another, it is presumed that it is a gangster film. Fans in social media are predicting it to be a ‘Godfather’ like story. Karthik Subbaraj’s earlier films ‘Jigarthanda’ and ‘Petta’, and his upcoming film ‘Jagame Thandhiram’ are all gangster stories. It has been the director’s forte and he is expected to prove his mettle with ‘Chiyaan 60’ as well.

Vikram and Dhruv coming together for the first time ever has heightened the expectations. It has been a long time since Vikram has had a film that satisfied the majority of the audience. Regarding Dhruv, though he impressed everyone with his perfomance in ‘Aditya Varma’, the film didn’t do well at the box office. So both the actors will be hopeful of delivering a big hit.

Amazon Prime had bagged the film’s streaming rights, which is slated for premiere on June 19. The film will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages.

Meanwhile, the makers of ‘Penguin’ have released the teaser online. It looks like a thriller story set in the backdrop of a hill station. Keerthy Suresh supposedly plays the role of a toddler’s mother in the film. It is said to be a very challenging role. ‘Penguin’ is actually her first solo-lead film to be released after winning the National Award for Best Actress last year, so expectations are on the higher side.

‘Penguin’ is written and directed by debutant Eshvar Karthic. It is produced by Karthik Subbaraj’s Stone Bench Films and has music by Santhosh Narayanan.

OTTs are on the rise in India and ever since the lockdown, there has been a huge increase in new users. Many top stars and filmmakers in Bollywood have already started films and web series for these streaming platforms. In Tamil, Gautham Vasudev Menon was among the first mainstream filmmakers to explore the possibilities of web series with ‘Queen’.

It is now being heard that a new 9-episode series is being planned to be made in Tamil. Some of the industry’s leading directors are stars are likely to be part of this project. Mani Ratnam will be producing this show for Amazon Prime.

Apparently, the series is based on the Navarasas, the 9 emotions. The nine emotions included in Navarasa are Shringara (love/beauty), Hasya (laughter), Karuna (sorrow), Raudra (anger), Veera (heroism/courage), Bhayanaka (terror/fear), Bibhatsya (disgust), Adbutha (surprise/wonder), and Shantha (peace or tranquility). These are the emotions that humans show according to the situations. These 9 emotions will be the show’s core theme.

It is learnt that an episode each will be directed by Mani Ratnam, Bejoy Nambiar, Karthick Naren, Gautham Menon and Arvind Swamy. Some other big names are also in talks. An official word is expected to be made soon.

After the short film ‘Karthik Dial Seytha Yen’, director Gautham Menon is back with another lockdown attempt, this time a music video. Titled as ‘Oru Chance Kudu’, it is a fun romantic song featuring Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Megha Akash and Kalaiyarasan. The song got released online last day.

‘Oru Chance Kodu’ has its lyrics written by Madhan Karky and tune composed by Karthik. It is part of the Ondraga Originals series. The trio of Menon, Karthik and Karky had earlier made three other music videos named ‘Koova’, ‘Ulaviravu’ and ‘Bodhai Kodhai’.

As per the director, the core concept of this song is love, friendship and misunderstanding. It’s about a guy’s attempt to convey good things about his friend to a girl, who has had a misunderstanding with him. And he does this in a funny way. Shanthanu and Megha Akash play the couple while Kalaiyarasan essays the friend’s part.

‘Oru Chance Kudu’ was shot following the lockdown protocols just like Menon’s earlier released short film. It was shot completely in director Gautham Menon’s house with a very limited crew. Sathish has done the choreography and cinematography is by Manoj Paramahamsa.
