Alphonse Puthren reveals that he had planned a film with Mohanlal

Ever since the release of the sensational blockbuster ‘Premam’, there has been lot of speculations about director Alphonse Puthren’s upcoming films. He had planned several projects in these five years but none of them could take off. In a recent interview with The Cue, Alphonse revealed that he even had plans to make a film with superstar Mohanlal. However, he didn’t mention why the project couldn’t materialize.

Alphonse had also tried to make a Tamil film with Malayalam superstar Mammootty and Arun Vijay as the leads. It was a Mumbai-based film that was supposed to be made on a budget of over Rs 15 crores. But due to financial constriants, he had to drop the plan.

Alphonse is currently working on a musical film. For quite sometime, he has been learning music from various sources for the project. Kalidas Jayaram was supposed to star in the film initially but he opted out as he got other commitments. As of now, the director is yet to finalize the cast.

If reports are to be believed, Suriya is in talks with director Vikram Kumar for a new film. The two had earlier worked together in the sci-fi flick ’24’. This has triggered speculations among fans that the duo might reunite for its prequel. But no confirmation has been made by either of them yet.

Vikram Kumar is a National-award winner who is noted for his unique style of filmmaking. Some of his noted films include ‘Yavarum Nalam’ aka ’13 B’, ‘Manam’ and ‘Hello’. His last released film was ‘Gang Leader’ that had Nani in the lead.

Vikram’s 2016 film ’24’ explored the less-attempted theme of science-fiction and the film clicked among the masses. Suriya’s stellar performance in a triple role was widely appreciated. ’24’ even won a couple of awards at the National level — Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. The film has a scope for a sequel as well as a prequel. Let’s see if such a project materializes.

Suriya meanwhile has signed for projects with directors Hari, Siva and Vetrimaaran. He is also in talks for a couple of other projects with Lokesh Kanagaraj and Gautham Menon. ‘Soorarai Pottru’ directed by Sudha Kongara will be the star’s next to hit screens.

It has been five years since the release of the blockbuster film ‘Premam’. Strangely, its director Alphonse Puthren is yet to make another film after that. Although he is just two-films old, he has a big fan following particularly among the youngsters. Many have been eagerly waiting to hear about Alphonse’s next film.

In a recent interview, the director revealed that he is prepping up to make a musical film next. For the last couple of years, he has been learning music from various sources. According to Alphonse, this film will be entirely different from ‘Premam’. To ensure that there is no similarities between the two films, he has consciously stayed away from watching ‘Premam’.

Kalidas Jayaram was the initial choice for the project but he got busy due to other commitments. Alphonse is yet to zero in on an actor to play the lead. Details regarding when the film goes on floors are not yet known.

R Madhavan’s ambitious project ‘Rocketry – The Nambi Effect’ is in the post-production stage. The film which is the biopic of famous scientist Nambi Narayanan has Madhavan playing the lead role as well as wearing the director’s hat. Interestingly, Madhavan had got Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh to essay a cameo role in the film. SRK will be seen in the role of a journalist who takes the audience through the protagonist’s journey in flashback. He is already said to have shot for his portions. If reports are to be believed, the same character will be reprised by Suriya in the Tamil version. The film is being made as a multilingual in three languages – Tamil, English and Hindi.

Nambi Narayanan was a cryogenic division head at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In 1994, he was falsely charged with espionage and arrested. The charges against him were later squashed by the CBI and the Supreme Court declared him not guilty. ‘Rocketry’ will have Madhavan appearing in multiple looks. Since the story traverses different timelines, he paid special attention to his looks. He went through physical transformations to get a look strikingly similarly to Nambi Narayanan.

‘Rocketry’, the movie, is based on Nambi Narayanan’s own book ‘Ready to fire: How India and I survived the ISRO spy case’, which details about the controversial case and his infamous arrest.

Malayalam film actor Tovino Thomas and his better half Lidiya have been blessed with a baby boy. The star took to his social media handles to share the happy news. Celebrities like Peale Maaney, Vinay Forrt, Indrajith Sukumaran, Poornima, Farhaan Faasil, Nivin Pauly, Neeraj Madhav, Aashiq Abu, Akhil Paul and many others have congratulated the couple. Tovino and Lidiya were schoolmates who later got married. They have a 4-year-old daughter named Izza.

On the work front, Tovino has a handful of projects lined up. He was shooting for ‘Minnal Murali’ when the lockdown was announced. During that time, his thriller film ‘Forensic’ was running successfully in theatres. It got cut short due to the pandemic. The film will be available on Netflix from June 7.

Tovino’s next to release after things get back to normalcy will be ‘Kilometers and Kilometers’, which also marks his production debut. ‘Ajayante Randaam Moshanam’, ‘Pallichattambi’, ‘Bhoomi’ and ‘563 St Charles Street’ are some of his already announced projects.

Keerthy Suresh starrer Penguin gears up for release; Teaser to be out soon

It is already known that Keerthy Suresh’s ‘Penguin’ will have a direct OTT release. Amazon Prime had bagged the streaming rights and the film is slated to premiere on June 19. Meanwhile, the makers have announced that teaser will be out on June 8. ‘Penguin’ is the second mainstream Tamil film after ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’ to get a direct OTT release. The Jyothika starrer got released last week and met with decent response from the viewers.

‘Penguin’ is written and directed by debutant Eshvar Karthic. It is produced by Karthik Subbaraj’s Stone Bench Films and has music by Santhosh Narayanan. The film has Keerthy playing a pregnant woman’s role. This will be her first solo-lead film to be released after winning the National Award for Best Actress last year. The ‘Mahanati’ star also a handful of promising projects like ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’, ‘Miss India’, ‘Annatthe’, ‘Good luck Sakhi’, and ‘Range De’ coming up.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh is all set to make his debut in Tamil cinema. Last day, he shared the first look poster of the film, which has titled as ‘Friendship’. Action Arjun and ‘Bigg Boss’ fame Losliya will also be seen in other important roles in the film. All three of them feature in the poster.

‘Frienship’ is directed by John Paul Raj and Sham Surya. Santha Kumar is the DOP and music will be handled by Udhayakumar. JPR and Stalin are producing the film under the banner of Seantoa and Cinemaass Studios. It is learnt that shoot has already been completed and the makers are planning to release the film in August.

Appani Sarath of ‘Angamaly Diaries’ fame has signed a new project. The film has been titled as ‘Chunkam Kittiya Aattin Koottam’ and its official announcement was made only recently. A first look poster has also been released online. The film is written and directed by debutants Vinod Vikraman and Shaiju Thampan. Azeem Kadakkal is producing the film under the banner of Erico Films.

It is learnt that ‘Chunkam Kittiya Aattin Koottam’ is a travel-based film. Shoot has been planned to begin once the restrictions are over. Details regarding the supporting cast and technical crew will only be announced later.

After making a mark in Malayalam, Aparna Balamurali is set to establish herself in the Tamil film industry. Though she has already acted in a couple of Tamil films — 8 Thottakal’ and ‘Sarvam Thaala Mayam’, the upcoming Suriya starrer ‘Soorarai Pottru’ is expected to give her a big break in K-Town.

Aparna is paired with Suriya in the film. She essays a character named Bommi. Prior to shoot, the actress had shed weight and underwent several interesting workshops to get into the skin of and character. She also dubbed for her character in the typical Madurai slang with the help of a special coach.

Aparna finds Suriya a wonderful co-star. Though she was initially tensed about working with such a big star, Suriya eased her and made her feel comfortable. In her own words, she hasn’t come across a simpler actor than Suriya. Since he is also the film’s producer, he made sure everyone in the set was comfortable.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ is gearing up for release soon after theatres resume functioning. The film was recently censored with a U certificate. Directed by Sudha Kongara, the film is loosely based on the life of GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. Suriya plays a character named Nedumaaran Rajangam Maara, a common man hailing from Madurai who dreams of owning an aircraft business.

After a long gap of around 14 years, actress Kaniha is finally returning to Tamil film industry. She is playing an important role in the upcoming Vijay Sethupathi starrer ‘Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir’. ‘Varalaru’ was her last full-fledged appearance in Tamil though she essayed a cameo role in ‘OK Kanmani’.

As per trustworthy reports, ‘Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir’ is a musical set in the backdrop of Christmas and New Year celebrations. It is learnt that the film focuses on an international issue. Music plays a major role in the movie, so the makers have signed talented young composer Nivas K Prasanna. Chandra Arts is producing the movie.
