Prithviraj to play the lead in Venu’s Gabrielum Malakhamarum

Prithviraj has been shuffling between the various film sets. He has completed the first schedules of Pradeep M Nair’s Vimaanam and Jinu Abraham’s Adam Joan. The actor is yet to start filming for the remaining portions of Roshni Dinaker’s romantic movie My Story also starring Parvathy Menon.

With a kitty full of highly exciting projects, Prithviraj has signed yet another movie. He will be playing the lead in acclaimed cinematographer turned filmmaker Venu’s upcoming movie titled as Gabrielum Malakhamarum. Manju Warrier has been roped in as the female lead. The two will be sharing screen space with each other the first time through this movie, though Manju has played a brief cameo in Prithviraj’s Paavada. More details regarding Gabrielum Malakhamarum is not yet known.

Manju Warrier is currently shooting for Aami, a biopic on writer Kamala Das’ life. She is playing the role of Kamala Das in this movie, directed by veteran filmmaker Kamal. Prithviraj is also said to be playing a brief cameo role in Aami.

Director Venu meanwhile will start shooting for another movie Carbon, starring Fahadh Faasil and Mamta Mohandas in the leads. The movie will be a raw suspense thriller, set in the backdrop of forests. National Award winning filmmaker and music director Vishal Bhardwaj will be composing the music for this movie. K U Mohanan will be cranking the camera. Carbon is scheduled to go on floors this July.

Thalapthi 2; Vijay and Vikram to reprise Rajinikanth and Mammootty’s roles?

Kollywood media is abuzz with reports about legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam having talks with actors Vijay and Vikram for an adaptation of his own yesteryear blockbuster Thalapthi. The movie, released back in 1991 had two of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars Rajinikanth and Mammootty in the lead roles.

Thalapthi enjoys a cult status even today. The movie was an amalgamation of some of the biggest actors of that time like Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Amrish Puri, Srividhya, Shobana, Nagesh, Geetha, Jaishankar and also marked the debut of the 90s heartthrob Aravind Swamy.

Now, according to latest reports from K town media, Mani Ratnam has had talks with Vijay and Vikram and both the actors have given their consent to be part of the movie. The director is also trying to rope in Telugu star Ram Charan Teja to play Aravind Swamy’s role from the original. There is still no word from the director’s side about this ambitious project. If at all this project happens, it will be one of the biggest ever in South Indian cinema and the team will have to put in massive efforts to atleast come close to the original’s quality.

Meanwhile, there are also rumours about Bollywood filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar planning to remake Mani Ratnam’s Agni Natchathiram in Hindi. It must be noted that Bejoy was an former assistant to Mani Ratnam and was also part of the second unit team of Mani Ratnam’s upcoming movie Kaatru Veliyidai.

The director is currently busy with the post production works of Kaatru Veliyidai starring Karthi and Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. The movie is scheduled to hit screens on April 7.

Baahubali 2 will mark the biggest ever release in Kerala

The countdown for the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has started. This most awaited epic action drama is schedule to hit screens worldwide on April 28.

There are reports movie will be releasing in around 6500 theatres all over India. We also hear that Baahubali 2 will be the biggest ever release in Kerala. United Global Media, who also distributed the previous part, is realising the movie in Kerala.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabali currently holds the record for the biggest ever release in Kerala. The movie also stands top at the list of highest first day grossers in Kerala. If released in a record number of theatres, Baahubali certainly has the potential to register a new record for the inital day collections.

Trade experts and analysts all ober the country are keeping their fingers crossed to see whether Baahubali 2 can touch the 1000 crore mark and become the first ever Indian movie to do so. It must be remembered that the movie has already registered a pre release business of over 500 crores through distribution, satellite, audio and video rights.

Director SS Rajamouli has set the bar so high that will be a massive task for him to make sure that the movie lives up to the expectation levels. The team are currently working on the final patch up works before starting their promotional activities. The movie will have a simultaneous release in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.

Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni have bank rolled this epic action drama under the banner of Arka Works.

When Fahadh Faasil’s Odiyan reached Mohanlal’s hands

Mohanlal recently annouced his next movie after the ongoing B Unnikrishnan film Villain. Titled as Odiyan, the movie will be directed by popular ad filmmaker Shrikumar Menon, who will also be directing the epic historic drama Randamoozham.

It is reported that Odiyan is being made as the most expensive movie ever in Malayalam cinema and Mohanlal’s home production house Aashirvad Cinemas will be funding this movie which is all set to go on floors on May 25.

Interestingly, back in 2013, Odiyan was announced with Fahadh Faasil in the lead role. It was written by Jinu Abraham and was supposed to be directed by Priyanandan. National award winner Hari Nair was also roped in to handle the cinematography. An intriguing first look poster featuring a sheep was also released by the makers, Ordinary Films. However, the project could not take off and was later shelved.

We are not really sure whether it is the same Odiyan that Mohanlal has committed for. The Mohanlal starrer is written by national award winning scenarist Harikrishnan.

According to reports, Mohanlal’s Odiyan will be a story of love, revenge and myth. Folk tale has it that Odiyan is named after a man who is mastered in odividya, a black magic trick to tackle the enemies.

Apart from Mohanlal, another leading actor form Indian cinema will also be part of the cast. There are specualtions about Amitabh Bachchan sharing screen space with Mohanlal in this movie, but it has not yet been confirmed.

Manju Warrier is playing the female lead while Prakash Raj will be seen as a powerful antagonist role in Odiyan. The movie will be made with international standards with a foreign technicians working on the VFX department. Peter Hein will be choreographing the stunts.

Working with Kamal Haasan in Vishwaroopam helped inspired me a lot in Take Off : Mahesh Narayanan

Take Off is the latest talk of M Town. The movie has been getting extraordinary reports and highly positive word of mouth ever since it’s release on Friday. Critics have rated it as a must watch for some stellar performances and for the one of it’s kind attempt in Mollywood.

Take Off, marked the directorial debut of editor Mahesh Narayanan. A veteran in editing, Mahesh has worked in over 50 movies in several languages. One of his best works till date was in Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam, released in 2013.

The Iraq war stricken portions in Take Off had a similar tone to those in Vishwaroopam. Mahesh Narayanan in a recent interview admitted that working with Kamal Haasan was a great experience and that inspired him as a filmmaker in Take Off. He also acknowledged that it was Kamal Haasan who showed to him the possibilities of VFX. It must also be noted that the cinematographer of Vishwaroopam, Sanu Varghese was the DOP in Take Off. So that prior experience gained while working on such a big movie has certainly helped the team to pull it off with great quality, staying within the budget constraints of Mollywood.

Take Off is a story about nurses who got trapped in the Tikrit region in Iraq during the ISIS attacks in 2014. The movie is inspired from real life incidents where around 40 Malayali nurses from were rescued from the war zone by the Indian government.

The movie is jointly written by Mahesh Narayanan and PV Shaji Kumar. Parvathy Menon, Kunchako Boban and Fahadh Faasil played the major roles while Asif Ali has done a brief cameo.

Take Off was made as a tribute to late filmmaker Rajesh Pillai. The movie is funded by Anto Joseph and Shebin Becker in association with Rajesh Pillai Films.

Director has come out hard against the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). After the Competition Commission of India (CCI) asked AMMA, FEFKA and two of their subsidiary organisations, to pay a fine to the tune of Rs 11.25 lakh, Vinayan had asked the office bearers of these organizations to step down.

He asked AMMA president and Lok Sabha MP Innocent and FEFKA heads B Unnikrishnan and Sibi Malayil to resign from their positions. He also alleged that actions against him would not have been initiated by secretary Idavela Babu without the knowledge of Mohanlal, the general secretary of AMMA.

He offered this victory to late actor Tilakan. He made severe allegations against directors B Unnikrishnan, Kamal, Siddique and Sibi Malayil. Vinayan had approached the CCI after the organisations had issued an unofficial ban on him in the film industry. He filed a complaint stating that, AMMA and FEFKA asked actors and other technicians in the Malayalam film industry not to associate with him.

The CCI has imposed a hefty fine on the office bearers of the organisations. AMMA was asked to pay a fine of around Rs 4 lakh while FEFKA has to pay Rs 85,000.

FEFKA’s director union and production executives’ union have also been asked to pay a fine of over Rs 3 lakh and Rs 56,000 respectively. Directors B Unnikrishnan and K Mohanan have to pay around Rs 19,000 and Rs 27,000 respectively. Actor Innocent was imposed a fine of Rs 51,000 while Sibi Malayil will have to pay around Rs 61,000.

Nayanthara has been grabbing plum roles one after another. She has conspicuously stayed away from the glam doll roles and has committed only for movies that have a solid scope for performance.

The latest we hear is that Nayanthara is planning to do an out and out comedy entertainer that will have popular comedian Soori in a major role. According to Kollywood media, a newbie filmmaker has impressed Nayanthara with a humour subject and Soori will also be seen in a major role in the movie. It is not yet clear whether the two are playing a pair.

Nayanthara, meanwhile is waiting for the release of her upcoming horror thriller Dora, scheduled to hit screens on March 31. The movie, directed by Doss Ramasamy was recently censored with an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC for the horror element.

Nayanthara, meanwhile, has some other female oriented projects in her kitty. She is playing one of the leads in Imaikka Nodigal which also stars Atharvaa Murali and Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

Nayanthara is also part of Mohan Raja’s upcoming multi starrer, Velaikkaaran, that features Sivakarthikeyan, Fahadh Faasil and Sneha in other major roles. She has also committed for Unnai Pol Oruvan fame Chakri Toleti’s Kolaiyathir Kalam and Gopi Nainaar’s Araam.

Acclaimed producer and filmmaker Vidhu Vinodh Chopra was in Kochi recently to witness the Kochi Muziris Biennale. He was in awe of the spectacular art works displayed in the Beinnale.

According to reports, Vidhu Vinod Chopra was all praise for young sensation Dulquer Salmaan whom he regarded as one among the best actors from the current generation. Vidhu revealed that after watching some of Dulquer’s works, he had told the actor that he was impressed with some of his movies. The producer also added that he is hoping to work with Dulquer some day.

Dulquer in such a short career spanning nearly five years, has become one of the leading actors in Mollywood. He is also one of the most popular faces of South Indian cinema thanks to his his sophisticated looks and irresistible charm. Legendary filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is a self confessed fan of Dulquer and Karan Johar has also rated him as a great actor.

Dulquer is currently working with Bejoy Nambiar, a Bollywood filmmaker of Malayali origin. Their upcoming movie Solo is a bilingual in Tamil and Malayalam. The movie features five female leads and a star studded supporting cast. Second schedule of the movie has already kick-started in Kochi.

He is also doing two movies in Tamil and is also in talks with some biggies for his Bollywood debut.

Will the motor vehicle strike on March 30 affect The Great Father release?

Megastar Mammootty’s most awaited movie, The Great Father is all set to hit screens on March 30. The movie, written and directed by debutant Haneef Adeni, features Mammootty in the lead role of David Ninan.

Mammootty fans are promoting the movie like never before. It is the actor’s most hyped movie in recent years and hence the pre-release buzz surrounding the film has seen a new high. Advance booking for the opening day shows have already started and there’s an unprecedented rush to grab the tickets. Fans show have also been arranged in more than 80 centres all over Kerala.

However, Mammootty fans are in a spot of bother after a 24 hour motor vehicle strike has been called on for on March 30 to protest against the Central government’s decision to hike the third party insurance premium by 50 per cent.

Motor workers unions have called for the strike demanding roll back of the decision to increase the premium. BMS union have withdrawn from the strike.

Industry insiders and trade experts are pondering over whether the strike will hamper the movie’s release. The Great Father is expected to have a massive opening and Mammootty fans were hoping that the movie will register a new record in the opening day collections. But will the strike impact the opening day figures. We will have to wait till March 30 to find the answer.

Meanwhile, The Great Father has been censored with an U/A certificate by the CBFC. The movie is said to be a revenge thriller. Sneha is playing Mammootty’s wife, Michelle David in the movie. Kollywood actor Arya will be seen in a pivotal character as Andrews Eapen.

August Cinemas owned by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Santhosh Sivan, Arya and Shaji Natesan have funded this movie.
