Vikram’s Cobra trimmed by 20 minutes a day after its release

Vikram’s Cobra, which hit screens on August 31, has opened to mixed response. The film directed Ajay Gnanamuthu revolves around the life of genius mathematician, who is also an assassin. With Vikram appearing in multiple get ups and rich production values, the film looks grand but doesn’t strike a chord with the audience emotionally. At a runtime of over 3 hours, the film is an exhausting appearance.

After hearing all the criticisms, the makers have decided for an immediate damage control. They have trimmed 20 minutes of the film. A statement has been shared on social media, which reads,

“Any movie is a form of entertainment specifically curated to cheer audiences and make them enjoy the cinematic experience. It is of great happiness to the team if content delivered is worth the audience time and ticket money. We heard you. Cobra is now trimmed by 20 mins as suggested by film-goers, fans, our media friends, distributors & exhibitors. Now, watch the trimmed version of Cobra from this evening in all shows across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka and Kerala. Do watch in theatres and support.”

Natchathiram Nagargiradhu Review: Pa Ranjith’s film is beautiful, indulgent and thought-provoking

Natchathiram Nagargiradhu Review: Pa Ranjith’s film is beautiful, indulgent and thought-provoking

Pa Ranjith, known for making strong political films that speak for the oppressed, has attempted a new genre with Natchathiram Nagargiradhu. It is a love story. But wait it’s not your usual love story. It’s about love and its various facets. A deep exploration of the very idea of love. “Love is political”, shouts a character. So is the film.

Set against the backdrop of a theatre group in Pondicherry, the film has Rene (Dushara Vijayan), a feisty young woman as its protagonist. She is intense, bold, deep, well-read, passionate, and empathetic. But beyond all that is a bruised individual who suffered discriminations from various corners on the basis of her identity.

The aforementioned theatre group is a mix of various genders, race and identities. There’s a lesbian couple, gay couple, transwoman, lovers who recently broke up… Ranjith has deliberately included all of them to portray the many types of romantic love. Kalaiyarasan’s Arjun is a new member in the group. It is through him that we, the audience, are educated. He starts off as a privileged, ignorant, rich brat and towards the end, he evolves as a mature person with a better worldview and strong empathy.

Rene and Arjun are the two best characters in the film with proper arcs. Dushara and Kalaiyarasan come up with brilliant performances to bring life to Ranjith’ vision. Kalaiyarasan gets an extended stretch towards the interval block and the actor effortlessly owns it. Kalidas’ Iniyan is another interesting character but not well explored. He is a representative of the ‘woke’ people who don’t have a proper understanding of the world outside.

For a narrative that flowed seamlessly, the final act looked forced and out the place. The intentions behind including those portions are understandable but it could have been less dramatic. Maybe Ranjith wanted to show them as clowns who put up such theatrics.

In short, Natchathiram Nagargiradhu is a profound film that grows on you gradually. It is metaphorical, poetic, indulgent and discussion-worthy.

Cobra Movie Review: An ambitious and convoluted film that fails to impress

Cobra Movie Review: An ambitious and convoluted film that fails to impress

When it was announced that Vikram would be teaming up with the promising Ajay Gnanamuthu, who found success with Demonte Colony and Imaikka Nodigal, expectations were high. But there was a long wait. A waited that lasted almost three years. Finally, the film has hit screens amidst massive hype. Let’s see if it lives up to the expectations.

Cobra tells the story of Madhi, an assasin who is also a maths genius. He lives a secret life as a commoner without any digital presence. He uses his mathematical skills to calculatedly kill his high profile targets. An undergrad Maths student from Chennai finds a common link between these killings and approaches the Interpol with her findings. Meanwhile, a hacker keeps sending information to them about Madhi and his targets. The rest of the plot is about Interpol’s search and Madhi finding the hacker, with whom he has a previous history.

Ajay Gnanamuthu has stuffed in a lot of ideas in this 3-hour long film and it’s exhausting beyond a point. The ideas sound exciting on paper but falters with the execution. Take for example, the rain fight and the decision to narrate the flashback in-between the stunt sequence. It’s a solid idea, but lacks clarity and from there, the film starts to get confusing. With the introduction of a new character, there’s a lot happening and some scenes are incomprehensible to a certain extent. Wish, Ajay, who has also scripted the film, paid more attention in making it palatable to the common audience.

Vikram, like always, has put in a lot of efforts for the film. It’s understandable why the actor would have agreed to take up this film. There’s space for him to appear in multiple get ups and bring his A game in the mental health portions. He does all of that but it still doesn’t save the film. It’s unfortunate that the actor couldn’t continue the momentum he got with ‘Mahaan’.

Irfan Pathan is surprisingly good in Cobra. He is graceful, controlled and emotes well. The film has other several actors but not many make a mark. The portions involving Srinidhi Shetty, Robo Shankar and all the other melodrama could have been chopped off ruthlessly. It would have made the final product more tight and racy.

‘Cobra’ is a rich film in every sense. It has grand production values, apt cinematography and some good music from AR Rahman. Except for Adheera, the film all the songs looked out of place in the film but they all sound great individually.

In short, ‘Cobra’ is another misfire from Vikram, who is still trying to rehash Anniyan for some strange reason.

Ajith’s AK 61 and Vijay’s Varisu to clash for Pongal?

Reports from Tamil film industry suggest that Ajith’s ‘AK 61’ and Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ will clash at the box office during the Pongal season in January, 2023. If it happens, it will be the third such instance after the Alwar-Pokkiri clash in 2007 and Jilla-Veeram in 2014. However, industry insiders believe that a direct clash will be averted to ensure both the films get good number of screens.

‘AK 61’ is Ajith’s film with director H Vinoth after ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ and ‘Valimai’. Boney Kapoor’s Bayview Projects LLP and Zee Studios are jointly producing the film, shoot for which is still progressing. Touted to be a heist thriller, the film has Malayalam actress Manju Warrier as the female lead. The makers were initially planning a Deepavali release in October, but they have decided against it due to the extensive CG works.

Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ on the other hand is nearing completion. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the film is a family drama with a big star cast. While Rashmika Mandanna plays the female lead, actors like Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Khusboo, Sangeetha, Shaam and Jayasudha are also part of the cast. Produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under Sri Venkateswara Creations, the film will also be releasing in Telugu as ‘Vaarasudu’.
