I have never kissed my mom in my entire life: Vinayakan

For the past one week, one name that has been trending in Malayali social media groups is Vinayakan. The actor won the Kerala State best actor Award for his performance in the movie Kammattipadam.

The awards were announced on March 7 evening by the cultural affairs Minister AK Balan. Following the announcement, the media followed their routine of flocking the actor’s house to get an exclusive interview. However, they were in for a surprise this time. Contrary to the usual sugar-coated sophisticated talks, they were greeted by someone very unrefined and brutally honest.

Vinayakan was his usual self and did not have any kind of starry air. He spoke his mind and replied blatantly to all the questions that came his way. However, his response that day did not go down well with many.

In a recent interview to Asianet, Vinayakan cleared airs about what irked him that day. Apparently, a journalist had asked Vinayakan to hug his mother and offer sweets to her, just for the sake of clicking some stills for their front page columns. Unlike others who oblige to such practices, Vinayakan retorted and declined to do so.

In the interview, he said, “I have never kissed my mother in my entire life. I grew up in such circumstances where we didn’t even have basic groceries and here I am asked to do all such things. My mother is a sugar patient so I cannot offer her sweets. He asked me to do all that drama for the sake of a few photographs that can create the hype and bring him name and fame.

Here is a man who is genuine and forthright. His unrefined nature and talks may not go down well with some people but atleast he is true to himself.

Lichi is feisty and endearing at the same time with her unique slang, in fact the only character that does not have the Angamaly dialect.

I’m grateful to Megastar Mammootty even today : Bala

Actor Bala made his entry to Malayalam film industry quite later after he kick-started his career in Tamil. A major break in his career was given by director Amal Neerad, a debutant then, through his sensational gangster drama Big B.

Megastar Mammootty played the lead role in the movie, in which Bala essayed the character Murugan John Kurishingal, one of the four brothers of the Kurishingal family. In a recent interview, Bala said he was grateful to Mammootty even today for giving such a big space in Big B.

Bala had a solid role in Big B. His character Murugan was Bilal’s (Mammootty) go-to-brother when it came to stunts. Bala had a separate love track in the movie including a duet with his romantic interest Rimi, played by Mamta Mohandas. Not many stars would have given such a big space for a newcomer in his movie. But Mammootty did and Bala is indebted to him.

Big B gave an identity to Bala who later went on to several Malayalam movies notable of them being Puthiya Mukham, Alexander The Great, Ennu Ninte Moideen and more recently Pulimurugan.

Mohanlal striving for the acceptance of Malayalam movies outside Kerala

Mohanlal striving for the acceptance of Malayalam movies outside Kerala

Malayalam cinema is widening it’s reach and a lion’s share of the credit should go to Mohanlal. The industry was keeping a low profile during the start of this decade before his Drishyam made heads turn. It was then the biggest blockbuster of Mollywood and was successfully remade in all major Indian languages.

Post Drishyam, the youngsters gave a breath of new life into Mollywood, with some sensational successes like Bangalore Days, Premam and Charlie. Meanwhile, Mohanlal tried his hand in Telugu with Manamantha and Janatha Garage. While the former was critically acclaimed, Janatha Garage turned into a huge success registering multiple crores. Mohanlal soon became a popular face for the Telugu audience and he opened the market for Malayalam movies outside Kerala.

Last year, he once again weaved magic in the box office with Pulimurugan. The movie had some popular faces from other industries like Jagpathi Babu, Kamalini Mukherjee, Namitha, Makarand Deshpande, stunt choreographer Peter Hein etc. The action entertainer directed by Vysakh became the first Malayalam movie to enter the elite 100 crore club. The makers of Pulimurugan cashed in on Mohanlal’s rising popularity in the Telugu speaking states by releasing the dubbed version, Manyam Puli. It turned out to be a successful venture enjoying a theaterical run of over 50 days.

Following Pulimurugan, there was a sudden upsurge of big budget-multistarrers in Mollywood. Mohanlal’s next, 1971 Beyond Borders, directed by Major Ravi is also one such movie. In a bid to attract a wider audience, the director roped in Telugu star Allu Sirish and Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh to play pivotal characters. They are also planning to release the movie simultaneously in Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi on April 7.

Mohanlal is currently shooting for Villain, another big budget multistarrer, directed by B Unnikrishnan. The movie has a stellar star cast in popular Tamil actor Vishal, Telugu actor Srikanth, Raashi Khanna and one of the leading actresses of the South, Hansika Motwani. Such a star studded cast has seldom happened in Mollywood.

Filmmakers have sensed the rising popularity of Malayalam movies outside Kerala, and are hence roping in big stars from other industries. However, it’s Mohanlal who is the prime reason for producers to invest on such ambitious projects. For instance, Villain is produced by Rockline Venkatesh who has funded movies like Salman Khan’s Bhajrangi Bhaijaan and Rajinikanth’s Lingaa.

In a nutshell, Mohanlal is the catalyst for the soaring market value of Malayalam movies outside Kerala.
