Sivakarthikeyan’s Maaveeran begins

We had recently reported about Sivakarthikeyan teaming up with Madonne Ashwin of ‘Mandela’ fame for an action-thriller. The film titled ‘Maaveeran’ went on floors last day. Filmmaker Shankar’s daughter Aditi has been signed as the female lead. The actress is making her debut with the upcoming Karthi starrer ‘Viruman’.

The makers of ‘Maaveeran’ had earlier released a promo video which had Sivakarthikeyan getting beaten up by goons. He is then raised back up by strings from the shadow of a giant hand. The mysterious hand controls him like a puppet and fights all the men. When he regains his consciousness, Sivakarthikeyan shrugs off the strings and decides to fight them on his own. Though the teaser didn’t reveal anything about the plot, it certainly piqued the curiosity among many.

‘Maaveeran’ also stars filmmaker Mysskin and veteran actress Saritha in prominent roles. The latter is making her comeback to Tamil cinema after a long gap with this film. It has music by Bharath Sankar, cinematography by Vidhu Ayyanna and editing by Philomin Raj. Shanthi Talkies is producing the film, which has been planned as a Tamil-Telugu bilingual. It is titled as ‘Mahaveerudu’ in Telugu.

Karthi’s Viruman trailer grabs attention

As reported earlier, Karthi is reuniting with ‘Komban’ director M Muthaiah for a new film titled ‘Viruman’. Ahead of its theatrical release on August 12, the makers held a grand audio and trailer launch event in Madurai recently. The trailer has fetched great reception so far. Just like the actor-director duo’s previous collaboration, ‘Viruman’ also looks like a village-based mass entertainer that’s high on action and drama.

Director Shankar’s daughter Aditi Shankar is making her acting debut with this film. Prakash Raj, Rajkiran, Soori, RK Suresh, Vadivukarasi, and Manoj Bharathiraja are also part of the cast. Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing music for the film and his songs have also good response.

Karthi’s brother, Suriya’s production house, 2D Entertainment is backing ‘Viruman’. The former also has ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ and ‘Sardar’ gearing up to hit screens.

Olavum Theeravum dubbing begins

After wrapping up the shoot recently, the team of ‘Olavum Theeravum’ have started the dubbing works. Lead actress Durga Krishna informed the same by sharing a latest photo taken with Mohanlal and director Priyadarshan.

‘Olavum Theeravum’ is a segment in the upcoming Netflix anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s stories. It is a remake of the 1970-classic of the same name, directed by PN Menon. MT had scripted the film based on his own story of the same title, which was published in 1957.

Priyadarshan is retelling the story with Mohanlal playing the lead role of Bapputty, essayed by Madhu in the orginal film. Hareesh Peradi and Mammukoya are essaying other main roles in the film. Santosh Sivan is the cinematographer and Sabu Cyril handles the production design.

The Netflix project also has films directed by Santosh Sivan, Rathish Ambat, MT’s daughter Aswathy V Nair, Shyamaprasad and Jayaraj.
Priyadarshan is helming another segment with Biju Menon in it.

Dhanush’s Vaathi teaser heightens expectations

Recently, as part of Dhanush’s birthday celebrations, the makers of his upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual ‘Vaathi’/’Sir’ shared new posters and a teaser. The ‘Asuran’ star is playing a teacher’s role in the film and the teaser has certainly heightened the hype. It is also noticeable that Dhanush has shot both the Tamil and Telugu portions seperately and dubbed it all by himself.

‘Vaathi’ is directed by Venky Atluri, who is known for helming films like ‘Tholi Prema’, ‘Rang De’ and ‘Mr Majnu’. It has Malayali actress Samyuktha Menon as the female lead. She is also playing a teacher’s role in the film. P Sai Kumar, Tanikella Bharani, Samuthirakani, Aadukalam Naren, Ilavarasu, Hareesh Peradi, Praveena and many others are part of the cast.

Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas are jointly producing the film. It has music by GV Prakash, cinematography by Yuvraj and editing by Navin Nooli. The makers are expected to announce their release plans shortly.

First single from Ponniyin Selvan goes viral

The first single from Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ got released a couple of days back. Since it is a pan-Indian project, the song has been released in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. AR Rahman has composed the song. He has also lent his vocals for the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions. The Kannada version is sung by Nakul Abhyankar and Alphons Joseph has crooned the Malayalam version.

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is a two-part epic and the first part is set for a grand theatrical release on September 30. The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical Tamil novel, which tells the story of early days of Arulmozhi Varman. He later became the great Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola I. Jayam Ravi, Trisha Vikram, Karthi and Aishwarya Rai play the main roles in the film.

The star cast also includes Vikram Prabhu, Parthiban, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Babu Antony, Riyaz Khan, Kishore, Jayaram, Rahman, Lal and Ashwin Kakumanu.

We had earlier reported about Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt playing the leads in ‘Bermuda’, directed by TK Rajeev Kumar. The film is gearing up to hit screens on August 19. Ahead of the release, the makers have shared a new single sung by Mohanlal. Titled ‘Chodhyachinnam Pole’, the song is composed by Ramesh Narayan and written by Vinayak Sasikumar.

This is one of very few instances where Mohanlal has sung a song for a film which he is not a part of. It is worth a mention that superstar is very close to ‘Bermuda’ director TK Rajeev Kumar. The latter has also been associated with Mohanlal for his directorial debut ‘Barroz’.

Mohanlal’s song is certain to be of a great help in ‘Bermuda’ promotions. Scripted by Krishnadas Panki, the film has Shane Nigam essaying a character named Indugopan, who is a bank employee. The plot kicks off when he approaches Vinay Forrt’s cop character sub-Inspector Joshua with a complaint. Saiju Kurup, ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ fame Gowri Nandha, Sudheer Karamana, Harish Kanaran, Dinesh Panicker and Niranjana Anoop will be seen in supporting roles.

‘Agent Tina’ Vasanthi part of Mammootty’s next?

We had recently reported about Mammootty and B Unnikrishnan teaming up for a thriller film. Shoot for the same is currently progressing at a brisk pace. Mammootty plays a cop in the film, which also stars Amala Paul, Sneha, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Tamil actor Vinay Rai.

Vasanthi, popular for her performance as Agent Tina in the recent Tamil blockbuster ‘Vikram’, is also said to be part of the upcoming Mammootty-starrer. Photos of Vasanthi with Mammootty from the film’s sets have fuelled the speculations. Shine Tom Chacko, Dileesh Pothan and Jinu Joseph essay other supporting roles.

Scripted by Udhayakrishna, who penned B Unnikrishnan’s last film ‘Aarattu’ as well, this yet-to-be titled thriller is based on a real incident. The director’s RD Illuminations is backing the film.

Suresh Gopi’s Paapan to release across GCC from tomorrow

The Suresh Gopi starrer ‘Paappan’, which hit screens in Kerala on July 29, is doing excellent business at the box office. Most shows in the state are running with full occupancy. Meanwhile, the makers have announced that the film will be releasing across GCC from tomorrow (August 4).

‘Paappan’ directed by Joshiy is a crime thriller in which Suresh Gopi plays a retired cop named Abraham Mathew Mathan. Nyla Usha plays his wife and Neeta Pillai essays their daughter’s role. Gokul Suresh, Kaniha, Nandu, Chandhunadh, Vijayaraghavan, Tiny Tom, Shammy Thilakan, Asha Sharath, Ajmal Ameer, Rahul Madhav, Srikanth Murali, Janardhanan and many others are part of the cast.

‘Paappan’ is scripted by RJ Shaan of ‘C/O Saira Banu’ fame. It has music by Jakes Bejoy and cinematography by Ajay David Kachappilly.

Here’s the fun trailer of Alia Bhatt-Roshan Mathew starrer Darlings

The trailer of Alia Bhatt’s new film ‘Darlings’ got released recently. The film is set to have its premiere on Netflix on August 5. Debutant Jasmeet K Reen is directing the film, which is a dark comedy set in a lower middle-class neighbourhood in Mumbai. It is a quirky mother-daughter story revolving around the two who discover love and courage in exceptional circumstances.

Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah play the lead roles. Vijay Varma is paired with Alia in the film. Malayalam actor Roshan Mathew, who made his Bollywood debut with the Anurag Kashyap directorial ‘Choked’, is essaying another prominent role. From the trailer, it looks like all the actors will have equal prominence.

Red Chillies Entertainment headed by Gauri Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are presenting ‘Darlings’ in association with Alia Bhatt’s newly launched Eternal Sunshine Productions.

Highway 2 is not a sequel, confirms Suresh Gopi

Recently, on the occasion of Suresh Gopi’s birthday, it was announced that the actor will be reuniting with with director Jayaraj for a film titled ‘Highway 2’. While it was initially believed as a sequel to their 1995 film ‘Highway’, Suresh Gopi has denied it. According to him, it is not a sequel and will have a completely different subject.

Suresh Gopi revealed that ‘Highway 2’ is based on a real-life murder incident. The makers are planning to shoot the film in highways across the country. Planned as a revenge-thriller, the film will be produced by Leema Jospeh. More details are awaited.

Suresh Gopi currently is waiting for the release of ‘Paapan’, which sees him reuniting with Joshiy after a long gap. The film is slated to hit screens this coming Friday (July 29). Suresh Gopi also has ‘Ottakomban’ and an untitled mass entertainer with Rahul Ramachandran in his kitty.
